An 80s Alt Rock Heart

My father and I don't always see eye to eye. Not because I'm just that short but because we express what we are feeling differently. For me, I prefer bottling it up because I don't want to feel like I'm burdening others. My dad, on the other hand, sucks it up and moves on. However, one thing we can agree on is music.

I would say my love for music started in all those car rides I would go on. Every ride was a new adventure and any time I sat in my father's car, he would flip through every radio station to find a song he liked which was almost always some form of 80s alt/indie rock. The Cure, Tears for Fears, and The Smiths were always good options for cruising down highways. Depeche Mode was always a personal favorite of mine.

Eventually my taste in music began to grow and evolve. I started broadening what I listened to. I would say that I am an appreciator of far too many genres of music, including indie pop, j-pop, goth, alt rock, and occasionally more modern rap. My father also started to listen to other kinds of music too, including artists like Olivia Rodrigo and The Neighbourhood.

Whether or not our words can express what we are feeling, we both understand that the music will always be there for us, just like we will always be there for each other. Always.

  1. I absolutely love this! You connected the Jimi Hendrix story to your own unique experiences with your father, and it fit together so well, with the underlying motif of music as well :) so so good!

FAQ

- "What does the title of your blog even mean?" It is a fairly popular Latin phrase that means "toward better things". I hope to learn and grow and become a better person by the end of this school year. Also, Latin is quite fascinating, and I want to learn it, but nobody really speaks in Latin anymore, so it wouldn't be that useful for me.
